I Tried It....Alta Perla

I went there, yes, I did. I dropped my hard earned cash on a $50 bottle of nail polish. I’d do it again.

Alta Perla by Christian Louboutin is hands down one of my best beauty purchases of 2014. I’m aware that the polish came out months ago. I acknowledged it with a smirk and a shrug. “That’s nice, Louboutin is widening it’s market.” I’d never buy a bottle, my personal color pallet is more monochromatic. “They’d never have anything for me.” So I thought.

The colors available come in The Noirs, The Nudes and The Pops. So there’s a polish out there for everyone. In my chosen line of work it’s better to have clean “almost nude” nails but that gets boring. Alta Perla is a understated brownish-gray with a blue undertone. Far from super edgy-chic black but a bit tougher than a “clean” nude polish.

Pricy? Yes. But the quantity in the bottle and the fact I only needed to apply two coats won me over. My time is my money and the less I have to stop in nail salons for manicures that chip in 3 day’s isn’t worth it to me. Two coats, at home, dry in 20. I’m going back for more.

Available on Sephora $50

Beauty privilege is very real. None of us are imagining it, and if we aren’t born genetic lottery winners, our only option is to compensate with style, grace, and charm. Of course, none of that shit comes cheap. That’s kind of the whole point. It’s all meant to be aspirational and exclusionary. We’re supposed to feel depressed by our skin, agitated by our bodies, and anxious about our invisibility. That’s the insidious subtlety of social control. The worst part is that we know in our rational minds that it’s all bullshit, and yet we’re still plagued with self-loathing when we can’t live up to unattainable beauty standards. No matter how much self-acceptance we achieve, we can still look in the mirror and instantly catalog all the things about ourselves that we don’t think measure up. It’s maddening. It makes us feel like hypocrites even though it’s not our hypocrisy.

Oh, lots of thoughts running through my brains
Don’t want to be caught like Kurt Cobain

My mind’s a Porsche, switching lanes
All of a sudden I’m feeling all of this guilt and pain

Kids is dying from drugs they buying
Popping a molly, get feeling like Iron Man
Shit is like lighting a fire inside of them
Fuck is you thinking kids trying to get higher than?
Higher than Mars, killing ourselves cause we live in a fucked up environment
Dreams of becoming doctors and firemen
Shouldn’t give in to this early retirement

Bill Cunningham | Gray Is the New Black

I realize that Mr. Cunningham has already spoken to the gray trend for Spring/Summer but this trend is still really strong for Autumn. I’ve been encouraging my clients to trade in their black bags for shades of gray this season and while not all are convinced, the ones that are trying it aren’t coming back for black anytime soon.
